College of Nursing Historical Highlights

  • 1943 Department of Nursing Education within the College of Education at the University of Georgia established
  • 1956 Department of Nursing transfers from UGA to MCG and becomes School of Nursing
  • 1957 Augusta College establishes instruction agreement with Barrett School of Nursing at University Hospital
  • 1963 Augusta College begins offering four year nursing degrees
  • 1968 Master of Science in Nursing program established at MCG
  • 1974 MCG opens satellite campus in Athens (School of Nursing at Athens)
  • 1974 Beta Omicron chapter of Sigma Theta Tau chartered at MCG
  • 1986 Board of Regents approves MCG’s PhD in Nursing program
  • 1994 Georgia’s first Nursing Anesthesia program established at MCG
  • 1996 Augusta College becomes Augusta State University and switches to semester system prompting changes to the program
  • 1998 MCG establishes the Kellett Chair of Nursing
  • 2000 ASU establishes exchange program with Takarazuka Hospital School of Nursing and Kobe College School of Nursing in Japan
  • 2005 Doctor of Nursing Practice program approved, becoming the 10th DNP program in the nation
  • 2006 Master of Science Clinical Nurse Leader program begins, becoming the first in the region
  • 2011 MCG becomes Georgia Health Sciences University prompting the School of Nursing to become the College of Nursing
  • 2013 MCG and ASU consolidate to become Augusta University. The nursing programs consolidate to become Augusta University College of Nursing
  • 2016 DNP-NAP program replaces the CRNA master’s program
  • 2018 Newly created accelerated BSN program is launched

College of Nursing

The College of Nursing was the first public collegiate school of nursing in Georgia. For over 75 years, the CON has provided top-quality education through its undergraduate and graduate programs. It enrolls over 800 upper-division and graduate students on its Augusta and Athens campuses and via distance learning. With access to clinical sites across the state, a high-fidelity simulation center, and expert faculty, graduates are prepared to serve their communities and address the nation’s nursing shortage.
